Why overselling causes buffering

A server has finite bandwidth. If it can comfortably serve 1,000 simultaneous streams and the provider has sold 5,000 subscriptions, it works fine most of the time — because most subscribers are not watching simultaneously.

Then Saturday at 3pm arrives and everyone opens the same channel at once. The server runs out of capacity, and every subscriber experiences it as buffering. This is the single most common failure in the IPTV market, and it is a business decision rather than a technical accident.

This is why peak-time testing is the only test that matters. Overselling is invisible on a Tuesday morning and unmistakable on a Saturday afternoon.
